Implications of the AIDS Epidemic for the South African Economy
IHS Markit South Africa was a major contributor to a groundbreaking study on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the South African macroeconomy that was published by an international brokerage. This study has been widely referenced in further work done by both academic and private-sector institutions. Using IHS Markitís macroeconometric model, the costs of the epidemic to the economy were measured through its impact on the population, lower productivity, increased costs to companies, increased private-sector demand for healthcare, lower household income, and higher government expenditure on health services. The costs were measured by the impact on GDP, prices, interest rates, and balance of payments.
